Last updated: October 25, 2026 · Original questions written from the official exam program
This is a full 40-question practice test for the French civic exam, built like the real thing. Same number of questions, same five themes in the same proportions, 12 situational questions. One difference: under every French question you’ll find an English translation, and you can switch it off when you’re ready.
Take it once without preparing. Your score tells you more than any study plan.
How this practice test matches the real exam
We built it from the official program, so the mix of questions mirrors exam day:
- 11 questions on principles and values of the Republic, 6 of them situational
- 6 questions on institutions and the political system
- 11 questions on rights and duties, 6 of them situational
- 8 questions on history, geography and culture
- 4 questions on living in French society
The pass mark is the same too: 32 out of 40. Below that, the real exam is a fail.
What we can’t copy is the exact wording. The questions here are our own, written to train the same knowledge. The official list of knowledge questions is published for free on formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr, and you should work through it as well.
How to use your score
Below 25. Don’t book anything yet. Go back to the civic exam guide and work theme by theme, starting with the lowest line in your result table.
Between 25 and 31. You’re close, and close is where most people fail. In our experience, the missing points hide in two places: history dates and situational questions. Both are trainable in a couple of weeks.
32 or more. Good. Now do it again with the English switched off. On exam day you won’t have the translation, and reading speed in French is what costs English speakers the most.

Traps we see over and over
Some wrong answers are wrong in a sneaky way. The exam loves them.
- Travail, Famille, Patrie. It looks official. It was the motto of the Vichy regime. The Republic’s motto is Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité.
- School from age 6. That was the old rule. Education has been compulsory from age 3 since 2019.
- 348 deputies. That’s the number of senators. The National Assembly has 577 deputies.
- Neutrality for everyone. The duty of religious neutrality applies to people working in public services, not to the members of the public they serve.
That last one deserves real attention. It’s behind several situational questions, and our guide to situational questions walks through the logic.

Frequently asked questions
Are these the official exam questions?
No. We wrote these questions ourselves from the official program, so they train the same topics without copying the exam. The official knowledge questions are published on formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr.
Will the real exam show English translations?
No. The real exam is in French only. Use the English here to understand, then retake the test with English switched off.
How long should I train before booking?
Until you pass this test with a margin, several times in a row, with English hidden. For most people that’s a few weeks of short daily sessions.
How long do I have on exam day?
45 minutes for 40 questions, a little over one minute per question. Time yourself on your second attempt.
